India’s central investigation agency is searching for a bell

The British built a viceregal lodge in Shimla, India. It was more palace than lodge, as the picture above shows. Today, that palace is called Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS). People who have visited the place will recall seeing this massive bell hung in an ornate carved frame.

It was no ordinary bell. It certainly was not a church bell or a bell cast for the palace, as these Devanagari inscriptions on its rim show.

Somehow, this bell has disappeared from the IIAS. It’s too big to be carried away in a tourist’s pocket, yet gone it is, and India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is searching for it. It is even promising a reward of 100,000 rupees (although it does not know where to place the commas in a large number) to anyone who can help find it.

Help CBI find the bell, please.
